How to Recover Saved Passwords in Ipswitch WS_FTP

In this article, you’ll learn where Ipswitch WS_FTP stores your FTP login passwords, how they are protected, and how you can easily recover them.

WS_FTP Password Secrets

WS_FTP stores all your FTP login passwords at following location

[Windows Vista/7/8/10]
C:\Users\[user_name]\Appdata\Roaming\Ipswitch\WS_FTP\Sites\ws_ftp.ini

[Windows XP/2003]
C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\Ipswitch\WS_FTP\Sites\ws_ftp.ini

This ws_ftp.ini file contains series of entries for each FTP server configuration.

Here is the sample entry for one of the FTP site

[_config_]
mailaddr=wsftp90@
URLHistory=urlhistory.ini

[xenarmor ftp site]
CONNTYPE=4
HOST="ftp.xenarmor.com"
UID="ftpuser"
PWD="_BBNZuGbsK1b2UH0RpASDXLAcPNggmdJS4QOKKJC7eCg="
TABCOLOR="default"

Here HOST, UID, PWD refers to FTP Server, Username and encrypted password respectively.

In the PWD text first char (_) is not used. Rest of the text is BASE64 encoded. After decoding it using BASE64 algorithm, you will get hex bytes. On decrypting these hex bytes using Triple DES algorithm, you will get final password.

In simple words, WS_FTP first encrypts the FTP password using Triple DES algorithm and then encode it using BASE64. Final text is stored in ws_ftp.ini file as shown above.
