How to Recover Saved Passwords in SmartFTP

In this article, you’ll learn where SmartFTP stores your FTP login passwords, how they are protected, and how you can easily recover them.

SmartFTP Password Secrets

SmartFTP stores all your FTP login configurations at following location

[Windows Vista/7/8/10]
C:\Users\[user_name]\AppData\Roaming\SmartFTP\Client 2.0\Favorites\Quick Connect\

[Windows XP/2003]
C:\Documents and Settings\[user_name]\Application Data\SmartFTP\Client 2.0\Favorites\Quick Connect\

Older version of SmartFTP stored each FTP site details in separate XML file in the above folder.

Here is the sample of FTP site entry (only important details shown)

<Host>ftp.xenarmor.com</Host>
<Port>21</Port>
<User>xenuser</User>
<Password>9722972FC57CAE5A3EDB8B4E6296</Password>

Here “Host”, “User” & “Password” fields refer to FTP server, username & encrypted password respectively.

SmartFTP (older version) used Windows DPAPI functions to encrypt the FTP password. Resulting password is further encoded using custom algorithm before storing it in the above file.

Newer version of SmartFTP stores each FTP site configuration in separate DAT file in the above folder.

This DAT file contains all the FTP site details stored in proprietary file format. Here all fields like FTP server, username & password are stored in clear text in Unicode format.
